Jingle all the way

Jingle All the Way - Movie Poster

A new toy is in the market, it is called Turbo-Man and that’s what every kid is wanting to have for the Chrsitmas. Thrown in a dad (Arnold Schwarzenegger) who is too busy to pick the toy before it run out of stock at the neighbourhood stores and a sweet kid who will not take anything else.

Well, it was a ok-ok movie, but what makes me discuss this today stem from reactions to this article in the BITS blog at NY Times. There is this author Katie, whose 14 year daughter’s iPhone becomes a brick after the software update. The article was written to highlight the fact that not just iPhones with illegal software, but even the ones which have been legally used (by a kid) still got to bear the brunt of Apple’s decision to “brick” the iPhones.

But, if you look at the comments, most of them are horrified that a kid has such an expensive toy, especially the one she uses at school. Should kids have such toys? Is it a parental decision or the kid can have their say in this?

iPod Family

I had been debating the answers to these questions when this article appears (again) in the NY Times which shows the innovative ways how some schools are using the iPods. I tend to agree - iPod can potentially be put to good use, while the kid can have some fun at the side too. What is however very clear is this - Apples jingles all the way to the bank.
