The Prestige

Of the recent crop of movies I’ve seen, this one stands out - as being the one which is innovative and with suspense that holds you till the end. Christopher Nolan, the director of this movie, is already renowned for his other pieces - Memento, batman Begins.

If you have not seen Memento, I urge you to see that one ASAP. It is one movie where you cannot stop thinking, and the director makes you sweat for each and every scene. One interesting thing about the director is that he hates CG - And thus, in Batman Begins, there is no graphic used. That is some credible achievement for a comic book superhero story, and according to me, the best Batman movie till date.

Well, this blog was more for my Prestige pressure cooker, and my experiments with it. I have never had the need to cook in India, and once here, I knew cooking may be come necessity if one has to think of Indian food. So, my mother was surprised when I was leaving India and I said I need a cooker. So she went ahead and got me the best - Prestige cooker, with utensils that fit inside to make rice and dal simultaneously.

Once here, the first three months were spent in a hotel, and the Prestige was almost loosing its ego!

Then, when I shifted to this apartment, along with my still new Prestige, I got a roommate (Gana) who is an expert in cooking. (Actually, he is a big cooker :) So, it became his Prestige that he has to cook well, and as long as I am being fed, I didn’t have any (prestige) to loose.

The one fine day Gana went to India - and in a true good roomie style, kept lot of cooked food in the refrigerator, and things still seemed fine. Soon however, the fridge was getting empty and Gana was nowhere in sight. At the same time a pot-luck was being organized here, and though I got the invitation to attend, I was told - it’s ok if you don’t bring anything, we know you can’t cook.

Now it really was Prestige at the sake. As I sat in the morning to think what I can make for the party, I realized I was hungry, and then remembered that the fridge too was empty. So, I took the Prestige and the Phone out - Called three experts in cooking, asked them the quantities of rice and dal to put vis-à-vis water, etc, and then double-checked with a fourth expert.

Wow man the lunch was amazing - Rice, Dal, Curd, Pickles … Actually, coming to think of it, only these four :-(

But then I was enthused with my experiments, and in the evening’s party, the dish prepared by me was the biggest hit with the kids. Yes, it was the curd rice, and it tasted so well…

My Prestige regained, I put in the top shelf in the kitchen, as a trophy for a man who knows to cook his own meal.
