For those of you who remember this satirical work from Jerome K Jerome, don’t be disappointed as you read about my second fishing trip - With Dan and Krishna. The boat we were in is a specialized machine for Tuna fishing, and is captained by Al - A person who has written literally dozens of books on Tuna fishing.
Captain Al is also known for his conservation and tagging activities, and it is even more fascinating to know that last year alone he caught and released four fishes tagged by him previously. And you thought needle on a haystack was difficult!
We set out early in the morning, and by that I mean 4 AM, as the old adage goes, early bird catches the fish. I soon learnt from Paul (the deckhand and whose pics you are seeing) that Tuna fishing is a different “ball”game from Cod fishing. The day was unusually sunny and warm for it was Fall already and the waters calm and nice, maybe the Sea Goddess was in a benevolent mood.
Aboard the boat, me and Krishna launched into a philosophical debate, the kind you get into, when you are 100 miles deep into the sea, and the only thing your eyes can make out is water and more water. Dan finds fishing a refreshing activity, and by a previous arrangement, we never talk business on the boat.
For those who have seen Fevicol advt or have some notion that fishing is a relaxing sport, think again. It is a sport, where apart from skills (which are easy to learn), a huge amount of energy is required. A day at the sea can really wear you out, even if you have been fishing for a little while.
It was mid-morning soon, and still no Tunas around, so we decided to head towards Long Island, NY and do some Base, Blue fishes and maybe some Cod. Dan is an expert, and my guru, who thought me the art and science of the sport. But me and Krishna could only watch in fascination as Dan kept bringing up fish after fish. Hmmm, at least we won’t go empty-handed.
The highpoint later was when Krishna caught two fishes in one go. It was a record waiting to be broken, and I was soon struggling with my line, calling out for help, trying to reel in and still finding the going difficult - for a moment I thought I had caught a shark or something. It was a set of three fishes - two blue and one base, and you should have seen the smile on my face - ear to ear.
Had “whale” of time the whole day on the high seas, and back on the land, Dan treated us to the New England specialities - Clam Chowder and Clam Cakes. It was time to go back, rest for the next day, when we have to fish in troubled waters of another kind.
